Editor of Vogue Italia, Franca Sozzani, continues her campaign against pro-anorexia websites by starting an online petition against those sites.

"Sozzani said: 'Curvy women are back in all their splendour.  The exuberance of a body with rounded lines is much more alluring and sexy...a growing number of readers are now asking to see – even in fashion magazines – a real world, made of real people who are not obsessed with staying thin, but are able instead to naturally accept and respect their bodies as they are.'

The editor has been busy collecting signatures for a petition to shut down websites encouraging eating disorders.

'Fashion has always been blamed as one of the culprits of anorexia, and our commitment is the proof that fashion is ready to get on the frontline and struggle against the disorder.'"

  1. i wish 'curvy' just meant curvy. these days, to most women, it means big. i feel fat when people call me curvy because it seems to be a word for people much bigger than me. the girl on the cover is much bigger than i am. she's lovely though. why am i commenting? silly me.

  2. I am italian and I suffer from an ed. Through other discussion forums we are following Ms Sozzani's campaign and I am sad to say it is all a farce.
If you could read her personal blog and the interviews she released on the matter (which are in italian, I don't know if they've been translated), you would easily understand it. It's nothing but commercial strategy, a strategy by which she just tries to "pass the buck" by shifting the responsibility from the world of fashion to the world of social networks (pro-ana blog, websites, facebook pages ect.).
But then, if you have a look at all the other Vogue Issues, youìll see just how "curvy" models are...they are skinny. And the skinny ones will be back soon, maybe already in the July Issue. If you can, keep an eye on it.

I just love your blog and find it so extremely revealing, thank you for all the stories that you post.

  3. Just yesterday, I was reading about Vogue Italia featuring Ann Ward, who is super duper skinny. So who knows what they really think. Still nice to see it, though.

  5. this website (medusa) is a welcome change to those of us who are used to being bombarded with the media that tells us concentration camp-thin individuals are still too fat. i hope it helps those who are suffering from distorted body image and eating disorders. thank you for maintaining this source of information and help for others, and i hope to keep up with the site in the future.

  6. You have a great website, no doubt. But it is ridiculous to be judging slender people for being the way they are. Not all slender people have an eating disorder! 65% of all Americans (307,006,550) are overweight or obese. "Only" 8 million have anorexia or bulemia. One person dies every 30 seconds of heart disease in the US!!!

People in this country have to lose weight if any.

The girls in the photos are overweight, not curvy.

  7. To Anonymous,

If you honestly think those beautiful women are overweight your views are seriously distorted!
That is what a healthy, real woman looks like.

  8. Medusa, hope you're doing well! pls can you post some news? this was your last post and we didn't know from you since that. it's everything ok?

  9. I miss you, Medusa! When will you be posting again!
I have to agree that it isn't useful to berate women for being thin any more than it is to berate women for being fat. We each own our own bodies and it is not for society, or ANYONE to tell us how we have to be. A "curvy" woman is no more "Real" than an emaciated anorexic woman. I'm one who believes that obesity is also a result of an eating disorder. Either end of the spectrum is no good.
That said, the women are beautiful, but that doesn't mean thin women are any less beautiful.

  11. I would never aspire to look like the (chubby imo) women in these photos. The reason some girls suffer from anorexia is because they think its either this(those womens bmi is prob slightly over 25-not good) or a bmi of 16. how about you tried to promote a nice MIDDLE ground, as in healthy, but still SLIM? Slim looks better to most people, its a fact. A bmi of 18-20 is slim AND healthy. The women on this cover do not look healthy to me. Being overweight is not healthy.
