Two average-size British journalists, Louise Burke and Kate Spicer, agreed to participate in a radical experiment: drop five dress sizes in just five weeks.
The goal of this BBC documentary was to show the drastic and deadly lengths women will go to be thin.
The shocking effects of their rapid weight loss and extreme dieting on Louise and Kate have to be seen to be believed.

Oh man, yeah, I started watching this the night it premiered- I literally could not get through it all because of all the horrid things that they were putting themselves through. Not even that, but they were putting themselves through the throes of a mental illness I suffer with daily involuntarily just to see what it would feel like! AHHHHH!
ReplyDeleteAnd honestly, I'm very worried about BOTH of these girls. :\
ReplyDeleteLily, what I found shocking was how quickly both Kate and Louise started showing signs of disordered eating.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they both felt that they would be immune to developing an eating disorder because they were going in with eyes wide open.
Amazing what a starvation diet can do to not only one's body but one's mind.
I missed this when it aired. I wish I could watch it but this old comp of mine can't handle videos for very long before freezing up.
ReplyDeleteDo you know if they plan on showing it again?
MrsM, I checked the BBC America website but there was no indication when or if it will be shown again anytime soon.
ReplyDeleteHere's the link if you'd like to bookmark it to check later:

Thanks, Medusa.
ReplyDeleteWas this really on the BBC? At the end of the show it said it was on channel 4?
ReplyDeleteAnyway ... It really opened my eyes on how easily and how quickly things can spiral out of control. I am trying my best to stick to a low carb wedding dress diet. We are going out tomorrow for Chinese new year and I has planned to purge with laxatives after to mitigate the impact. Looks like I am already at the top of a slippery slope. I won't be taking that path now, but I know that I won't be able to keep of the scales after just to find out how badly it has affected me. I was planning to swim for about half an hour on Wednesday. I guess i'll let that change to an hour or two and leave it at that. But planning that is worrying in itself.
ok, so there is only one thing those girls accomplished doing this program... they effectively shortened their life. This kind of strong decrease in calories and nutrients must lead to very complicated metabolic shock.
ReplyDeleteYes, a human organism is designed to deal with hunger very well and for long period of time, but…
In times when food is unavailable no healthy and normal human being (or any other mammal) will do running an hour a day just for fun or for any other stupid reason!
When food is unavailable every organisms will slow it’s metabolism down to preserve as much energy as possible, just to survive as long as it’s possible.
Those two girls made huge mistake! So drastic and fast weight loss will cause faster death, it’s well proven and known fact. And I’m really disappointed with those doctors who agreed to take part in this sick “experiment”.
It only shows poor quality knowledge of doctors and dieticians. No surprise we have these days epidemic of obesity and anorexia etc.
For everyone who suffers because of any eating disorder, especially anorexia and bulimia, the best way to get back health is low carbohydrate and high fat diet (and I mean animal fat diet!). Yeah, saturated fats and a LOT of ANIMAL proteins and B vitamins with folic acid.
Forget about fruits and vegetables… these are ineffective. The only ones which are necessary are leafy green vegetables.
P.S vegetarianism isn’t good also… In fact is damaging to human health because of lack of animal proteins and fats.
